Noarlunga Infusion Centre Services at Noarlunga Hospital

The Noarlunga Infusion Centre provides intravenous iron infusions for patients with severe iron deficiency anaemia, under the care of the Medical Ambulatory Care Service (MACS).

Referrals for this service should be sent for review by the MACS consultant by email at health.macsnhs@sa.gov.au or faxed to (08) 8488 6037.

In addition to iron infusions, Noarlunga Infusion Centre administers intravenous and subcutaneous to Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) outpatients from a variety of specialties.

To access these infusions, patients must be referred to relevant specialties within the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network.

Referrals for iron infusions

Inclusion criteria

  • Due to capacity, referrals for iron deficiency will only be accepted if
    Hb <=100g/L AND Ferritin <=30, OR
    Hb <=100g/L AND Ferritin <=100 with transferrin saturations <10%
  • Ability to stand transfer – ability to stand is a minimum requirement for NIC. Alternatively, the Metropolitan Referral Unit may be able to provide this service, please consider contacting them to assess suitability - Phone number 1300 110 600
  • Non-pregnant patients - if the patient is pregnant, please consider referring to the obstetric department at Flinders Medical Centre, phone: (08) 8204 4650, fax: (08) 8204 5210
  • Patient has failed trial of oral iron therapy
  • Adult patients >= 18yo only

How to refer

To refer, please email the referral to health.macsnhs@sa.gov.au or fax to 8488 6037
Options include:

  • completing the NIC Referral Form (PDF 156KB) provided,
  • using the templates for GP systems below, or
  • own letter but referrals will be rejected if essential information is missing

Essential referral information

The information below is required for triage and calculation of total iron requirement. Referrals missing essential referral information will be returned to the referrer for further information.

  • Pathology results: recent results must be attached – maximum 4 weeks old
    • FBC and Iron studies with
      Hb <=100g/L AND Ferritin <=30, OR
      Hb <=100g/L AND Ferritin <=100 with transferrin saturations <10%
    • EUC (required for infusion protocol)
    • LFT (required for infusion protocol
  • Mobility: The patient can stand transfer Yes / No
  • Pregnancy status: Yes / No
  • Failed trial of oral iron therapy: Yes / No
  • Age
  • Weight
  • Height
  • Allergies, including previous allergic reaction to intravenous iron
  • Past medical history
