The South Australian Centralised Medical Internship Application and Allocation Process for 2027 (Clinical Year) will open from 5th May 2026 – 4th June 2026.

About Medical Internship

The intern year marks the transition from student to medical practitioner, providing supervised experience in applying theory to patient care. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) grants provisional registration for this period of practice.

Interns must complete at least 47 weeks of supervised clinical work across a minimum of four terms (10 weeks each) in different specialties. No more than 25% of time can be spent in one subspecialty, and no more than 50% in one specialty, ensuring broad exposure. These requirements are set by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) under the AMC National Framework for Prevocational Medical Training.

Interns must gain direct clinical experience in the following Clinical Care Categories:

  • Care of patients with undifferentiated presentations
  • Peri-operative/procedural care
  • Care of patients with chronic illnesses
  • Care of patients with acute and critical illnesses

At year’s end, the employing hospital certifies satisfactory completion of all rotations. Ahpra then grants general registration upon confirmation of satisfactory completion and other requirements.

You can complete your internship in one of nine Local Health Networks in South Australia. You may request, or be required, to undertake one or more rotations in any of SA Health's accredited intern posts.

Applying for a Medical Internship in SA Health

The South Australian Centralised Medical Internship Application and Allocation Process (the Centralised Process) lets you apply to all Local Health Networks using one application. The South Australian Medical Education and Training (SA MET) Unit coordinates this process.

  • When to apply: Applications open in May for internships starting the following January*. This process occurs annually, in line with the dates set by the National Medical Intern Data Management (NMIDM) Working Group.

  • Eligibility: You must meet specific requirements at the time you apply and agree to the Terms of Use. Please read the 2026 Centralised Process Guideline 2026 Centralised Process Guideline for full details.

*unless otherwise negotiated with the matched LHN.

Separate to the Centralised Process, Local Health Networks may advertise positions throughout the year if positions become available. Recruitment outside the Centralised Process is not subject to the same eligibility criteria and may differ for each advertised position.
