About the scheme

The Supported Study Scholarship Scheme (SSSS) is a Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network (FUNLHN) program designed to encourage people who reside in the Flinders and Upper North region to enrol and successfully complete an approved undergraduate Nursing and/or Midwifery University Program.

The scholarship aims to increase the number of qualified nurses and midwives working in the Flinders and Upper North region, including in rural and remote areas.

The scholarship will provide up to 10 nursing and/or midwifery students the opportunity to gain employment as an Assistant in Nursing and/or Midwifery (AIN/M) at a designated Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network hospital/health service.

Successful applicants will:

  • be employed as an Assistant in Nursing and/or Midwifery at a minimum of 0.4 FTE (32 hours per fortnight) for the duration of their period of study
  • receive two scholarship payments (up to $25,000) at the commencement of their second and third years of study, providing financial support during university clinical placement blocks.


Eligibility

The scholarship is open to people who:

  • are eligible for, and enrolled in or intend to enrol in, a Commonwealth-supported Undergraduate Nursing and/or Midwifery University program
  • are Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Australia, and
  • have resided in the Flinders and Upper North region for two or more years prior to application. Proof of address will be required.


How to apply

Students who are appointed to the Assistant in Nursing and/or Midwifery positions will be based on a merit-based interview process.

Additional support

If you are successful in obtaining a scholarship through the FUNLHN Supported Study Scholarship Scheme, you will also receive additional support including:

  • a comprehensive FUNLHN Orientation Program
  • access to a Senior Registered Nurse and/or Midwife (RN/M) Mentor for the duration of the program.

  • Hawker Memorial Hospital
  • Quorn Health Service
  • Roxby Downs Health Service
  • Whyalla Hospital and Health Service
  • Port Augusta Hospital.


Your obligations

If you are successful in obtaining an Assistant in Nursing and/or Midwifery position through the FUNLHN Supported Study Scholarship Scheme (SSSS), you will be required to:

  • maintain employment as an AIN/M for the duration of your study period
  • demonstrate satisfactory workplace and academic performance for the duration of your contract period
  • complete your tertiary studies and gain registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Midwife with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • apply for a SA Health Transition to Professional Practice Program (TPPP) preferencing your base site of employment within FUNLHN
  • maintain employment as a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife at FUNLHN for a minimum of three years after registration (TPPP year, plus two further years).
