About Yorke and Northern Local Health Network

Yorke and Northern Local Health Network (YNLHN) provide services to 75,000 residents in the Mid North, Clare Valley, Gilbert Valley, Yorke Peninsula, and Port Pirie Region of South Australia. There are sixteen health services, eight Commonwealth funded residential aged care facilities, a medical practice, Mental health, Aboriginal Health, and Country Health Connect (Community Health) providing outreach services to the community

Program information 

Participants in the YNLHN TPPP can expect a program that offers support and opportunities in developing nursing and midwifery practice of the highest quality.

Midwives have the opportunity to focus on the skill development in all areas of midwifery care, across the spectrum of pregnancy and birth and the postnatal and neonatal period. Midwifery Group Practice is a five-site practice providing care for approximately 600 birthing parents and families in the region annually. YNLHN have led the way in development of the award-winning Midwifery Group Practice Model.

The YNLHN TPPP includes:

  • supernumerary days to support your immersion into our sites, giving you the opportunity to become familiar with staff and ways of working specific to the area of practice
  • orientation undertaken as a group over three days in one of the larger Hub sites, encouraging networking and team development with the Nursing and Midwifery Education Team, and peer networking between TPPP participants in YNLHN
  • structured professional development program encompassing a minimum of five TPPP study days, Advanced Life Support Education, and Emergency Nursing and Midwifery education
  • a permanent Nursing and Midwifery Education Team tasked with supporting TPPP participants, EN Cadets, and students on placement
  • assigned preceptors for support
  • weekly networking and debriefing opportunities as a team, and additional Education Team support as needed.

Temporary contracted positions for TPPP in YNLHN are 0.84 full time equivalent (FTE) (8 shifts per fortnight). Changes to this can be discussed with the Nursing and Midwifery Education Team, plus YNLHN have utilised a program called ShiftMatch – allowing staff to pick up additional shifts as they are available over the network.

Site locations and specialty rotations

The YNLHN TPPP is divided into 3 hubs. TPPP RM will be asked to identify preferred base hospital in the Network – Wallaroo, Clare, or Port Pirie, with one position available at each.

The Clare Hospital is a 23 bed acute facility. Services include acute surgical, medical and a 24-hour emergency service. The hospital also provides chemotherapy and dialysis. A busy Perioperative unit undertakes surgery multiple days per week with specialties including orthopaedic, ophthalmology, urology, gastroenterology, gynaecology, vascular, plastics, ear, nose and throat, and general surgery. Clare Hospital also cares for about 140 women per year within the YNLHN Midwifery Group Practice model.

Port Pirie Regional Health Service is the largest site in the Yorke and Northern Local Health Network with 53 acute beds providing the services in surgical, medical, and paediatric care, obstetric and maternity care, 24-hour accident and emergency department, surgical services, chemotherapy services, dialysis, and community and allied health services. PPRHS has a specialist obstetric service, and cares for approximately 200 pregnant and birthing women within the YNLHN Midwifery Group Practice.

Wallaroo Hospital is a 21 acute bed facility. Services include surgical services, medical services, rehabilitation, and a separately staffed 24-hour emergency service. The hospital also provides specialist outpatient services, and a dedicated chemotherapy unit. The perioperative unit undertakes surgery 4 days per week with specialties including orthopaedic, ophthalmology, urology, gastro-intestinal, gynae, vascular, plastics, ear, nose, and throat and general surgery. A Nurse Practitioner in the area of healthy aging supports the clinical areas so opportunity exists to work with nurses at the forefront of their specialties. Wallaroo Hospital cares for approximately 180 pregnant and birthing women from all over the Yorke Peninsula within the YNLHN Midwifery Group Practice
