SALHN GP Acute Care Update – online webinar

This online webinar will include updates from the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network’s Emergency Department and acute care services, plus a Q&A segment where we will be answering as many of your questions as possible.

Guest speakers include:

Participants needed

Bridging the gap: a pilot project assessing efficacy and safety of a conscious sedation pathway for consumers with neurodevelopmental disability to access early health intervention.

Dr Jessica Smith, GP/Rehabilitation Physician (SALHN), is excited to share a pilot program for a multi-tiered sedation pathway, with the hope that this evidence will help establish formal pathways in the future for adults with complex disabilities in the community.

To be a part of this project, the team are looking for people:

  • With an intellectual or developmental disability (such as autism)
  • 18 years or older
  • Have not been able to have a blood test or immunisation

The aim is to show safety and efficacy in the desensitisation and light sedation tiers (performed by a non-anaesthetist with additional training).

There is no cost to attend and dinner will be provided.

This is part of a series of 6 evening dinner meetings for GPs to meet the staff specialists, hear the latest updates and their impact on general practice, learn the best way to navigate referrals for common tricky conditions and clinically salient points to look out for, and work together to improve the interface between FMC specialist teams and the surround general practice community.

The first three SALHN GP Clinical Collaborative sessions in 2023 included:

  • Hepatobilary with Head of Unit Dr Mark Brooke-Smith, Dr Susan Gan, Dr Janina Kaczmarczyk and A/Prof George Barreto
  • Opthalmology with A/Prof Stewart Lake (Head of Unit) and his team of surgeons
  • Breast and Endocrine with Head of Unit Dr Michael Eaton and his team of surgeons.

Improving patient flow

SALHN has started a program to standardise management of common conditions to improve patient care delivery. Diagnostics including volume and length of stay were used to guide the selection for 12 conditions. The 12 areas of focus are:

  • acute back pain
  • delirium
  • heart failure
  • borderline personality disorder
  • falls and fractures in the elderly
  • palliative care pathway
  • diabetic foot
  • undifferentiated abdominal pain
  • acute paediatric respiratory illness
  • PV bleeding
  • EECU short stay patients
  • alcohol related presentations.
