Food industry sector information
All food businesses have a legal responsibility to make sure the food they sell to customers is safe. Food businesses must comply with the:
- South Australia Food Act 2001
- South Australia Food Regulations 2017
- Relevant sections of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code; and
- South Australian Public Health (Notifiable and Controlled Notifiable Conditions) Regulations 2012

In addition to meeting general food safety requirements, some industries have specific requirements because of the type of food they make, the type of food processing they do or the type of people they serve food to. To meet legislative requirements businesses in specific industries are required to have either an audit or inspection by:
- local government Environmental Health Officers
- Department for Health and Wellbeing Approved Food Safety Auditors or
- PIRSA Food Safety auditors
