Aged and Community Care centres, private hospitals and Sunrise EMR & PAS

Many state public hospitals and healthcare facilities use SA Health’s electronic medical record, Sunrise EMR, to manage and document patient care. The system is used in both metropolitan and regional locations – view all locations (PDF 946KB).

As a community healthcare worker, it is possible that you may receive questions from patients/residents about the system during the course of your work.

There are many benefits to a patient having only one electronic medical record that can be accessed by clinicians as patients move between public healthcare facilities in South Australia – view information for patients, families and the community for more details.

Electronic and paper medical records

Once Sunrise EMR is adopted by a public hospital or healthcare site, it becomes the primary patient administration and clinical documentation system.

Therefore, all patients who arrive at a Sunrise-networked healthcare site will automatically have an electronic medical record created for them if one does not already exist, and it is not possible to opt out of the system.

Patient privacy in Sunrise

Sunrise EMR ensures patient medical information is private and secure – view information for patients, families, and community.

Discharge Summaries/My Health Record

Upon discharge from hospital, a Sunrise-generated Discharge Summary will be given to or sent with the patient. The Discharge Summary outlines full details about the medical treatment they received.

Patient Discharge Summaries are automatically sent from Sunrise to patients’ My Health Record where the patient has a My Health Record account, and is over the age of 18 unless a patient expressly requests one is not sent.

This service allows GPs to view their patient’s hospital information during follow-up visits, assisting GPs to plan ongoing care if it’s required.

Sunrise electronic prescriptions

In addition to improving clinical and administrative processes, Sunrise EMR brings improvements to medication management through electronically generated prescriptions.

In some instances, dosing instructions may appear in an unfamiliar format – view information for pharmacists.
