South Australian Amputee Limb Service (SAALS)
The South Australian Amputee Limb Service (SAALS) administers funding for the provision of definitive artificial limbs for eligible residents of South Australia aged 65 years and older, through the Artificial Limb Scheme (ALS). SAALS is funded by the Government of South Australia and sits under the governance of the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN).
SAALS does not fund prosthetic eyes, breast prostheses, facial prosthetics, removable rigid dressings or interim limb prostheses.
Eligibility
To access funding through SAALS, you must:
Be registered and assigned a SAALS client number
- Hold a current Medicare Card
- Be a permanent South Australian resident
- Have functional limb loss
- Have completed rehabilitation
- Have long-term prosthetic limb needs stabilised
Ineligibility
People not eligible are those who:
- Are accessing interim prostheses
- Receive compensation for limb loss injury including Work Cover, third party insurer
- Receive funding support from another government body including NDIS, Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
Note: SAALS will not reimburse clients for the purchase costs of privately-funded prostheses.
Interstate Transfers
When a person moves from interstate, SAALS will request previous prosthetic service records and eligibility status from their state of origin Artificial Limb Service and/or National Schemes as part of the registration process.
Client will need to complete the “SAALS Consent to Share Patient Information form” and their interstate prosthetic service provider to complete the “Transfer of Prosthesis ownership incoming form”.
Prosthetic Repairs
Clients may receive services from only one Prosthetic Service Provider (PSP). Therefore, all repairs must be completed by the provider listed in their SAALS file.
Complaints, Compliments and Feedback
Contact the prosthetist in the Prosthetic Service Provider that manufactured your prosthetic limb and explain your concerns. The prosthetist will clarify your concerns and attend to your prosthetic limb needs.
Complaints, compliments and incidents derived from or involving direct client experience can be referred to Consumer Advisory Service (CAS) at SALHN.
