Southern Redevelopment at SALHN - Stage 1


The State and Commonwealth Government have committed $572 million as part of the Southern Redevelopment – Stage 1 program to support the growing demand for healthcare in the south.

A part of this funding, Flinders Medical Centre will undergo a major expansion and upgrade. This includes building a seven-storey Acute Services Building which will provide an additional 98 clinical spaces at Flinders Medical Centre.

The Acute Services Building will be built at the front of the existing Flinders Medical Centre Main Entrance.

Flinders Medical Centre Main Entrance will be closed from Thursday 3 October 2024 for the duration of the construction, approximately three years.

The Northern Entrance at Flinders Medical Centre will be the main hospital entrance to the hospital.

The pick up and drop off drive through will also relocate to inside the Care Public Car Park, where you will be able to park for 30 minutes free. After 30 minutes standard parking fees will apply.

At times, there may be some noise and traffic interruptions across Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Hospital and the Repat Health Precinct due to construction works. We appreciate your patience and understanding during these times.

An overview of Southern Redevelopment – Stage 1 projects:

Flinders Medical Centre

Acute Services Building

An Acute Services Building will be built at FMC to deliver an additional 98 clinical spaces.

The new Acute Services Building will consist of seven levels, including:

  • Level 1 – Entry, Lobby and Cafe, along with a new Day of Surgery Admissions area
  • Level 2 – 18-bay Medical Day Unit and new Podiatry area
  • Level 3 – four new Operating Theatres and recovery areas 
  • Level 4 – a dedicated floor for the FMC Eye Surgery Clinic which will enable the integration of SALHN’s ophthalmology services into a single facility
  • Level 5 – a 16 bed Intensive Care Unit and supporting CT scanner 
  • Level 6 and 7 – two 32 bed Adult Inpatient Units. 

Margaret Tobin Centre expansion

Expanding an upgrading the Margaret Tobin Centre at FMC will take the total number of beds from 38 to 48 beds, including a new 12-bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). 

Medical Imaging Services upgrade and expansion

This project completed in October 2023, delivered an additional medical imaging space with a new MRI and CT suite on level 2 at Flinders Medical Centre.

Noarlunga Hospital

24-bed Mental Health Rehabilitation Service

A new purpose-built $36 million Mental Health Rehabilitation Service with 24 specialist mental health beds for those with high and complex needs.

24-bed Inpatient Unit

A new $38 million 24-bed Medical Inpatient Unit will be constructed at Noarlunga Hospital.

Repat Health Precinct

26-bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit
A purpose-designed unit in a refurbished and expanded ward (ward 3 and 4), named Tarin Kowt Ward.

6-bed Complex and Restorative (CARE) service
A newly refurbished 6-bed space for the CARE Service, currently located within the Bangka Strait Ward.
