Contractors working in and around Port Pirie are at risk of being exposed to lead dust and fumes. See how you can prevent or reduce your exposure!
Port Pirie, South Australia (located 230km north of Adelaide) is the location of one of the world’s largest primary lead smelters and the third largest silver producer that has been in continuous operation since 1889.
Over time airborne lead-contaminated dust produced during smelting operations has been transported by wind and deposited throughout the city and in houses and on properties. This environmental contamination is an ongoing source of lead exposure for the community.
There are many ways you can reduce or prevent your exposure to lead in Port Pirie. The Environmental Health Centre provides important information about lead to young families and those just starting their family and helpful advice about how to reduce your exposure particularly the importance of washing and drying hands (PDF 152KB).
