Health Regulation & Protection Division

The Health Regulation and Protection Division works with and for the South Australian community to improve public health and clinical care.

This encompasses providing services, advice, education, support, policy, leadership and advocacy, administering legislation and partnering with service providers, government agencies and the non-government sector to identify and respond to current and emerging public health and clinical issues and opportunities

What we do

The Division:

  • works to prevent and control infectious diseases in the community
  • aims to protect and enhance public health by minimising potential environmental health risk factors arising from air, water, soil and hazardous substances
  • implements a range of policies and strategies to promote, improve and protect the health of the whole population, targeting those who are most disadvantaged
  • develops and administers/implements public health legislation and public health plans in conjunction with Local Government, other government departments and public health partner authorities
  • provides expert advice and information to a variety of stakeholders
  • performs regulatory activities in relation to food safety and suitability and food standards
  • works in partnership with health services to improve patient safety and quality of care
  • develops state-wide policies and programs that support good clinical practice and optimal use of medicines and health technologies, blood, and blood products, organs and tissues
  • ensures financial obligations and responsibilities under the national blood agreements can be met
  • provides health input into state-wide multi-agency planning for prevention and preparedness, response and recovery functions for emergencies and disasters
  • performs a range of licensing and regulatory functions
  • manages specific health promotion programs
  • monitors and reports on health outcomes and the determinants of health.
