Women's Assessment Service at Flinders Medical Centre

If you have any problems or concerns during your pregnancy or soon after childbirth, you may need to be assessed in the Women’s Assessment Service (WAS).

If you are pregnant and experience any of the following symptoms:

  • abdominal pain
  • vaginal bleeding
  • nausea and vomiting which cannot be managed by a GP
  • a reduction in your baby’s regular pattern of movements
  • headache or visual disturbances
  • if you suspect that you may have broken your waters
  • severe itching to the palms of your hands and/or soles of your feet
  • or if you want advice from a midwife

From birth until 6 weeks after you have had your baby:

Most of the common difficulties experienced by women after the birth of their baby can be dealt with by your GP or home visiting midwife. However, some women experience difficulties which require extra help. These may include mastitis, infection, heavy bleeding or pain unable to be managed with simple pain relief.

Accessing our service

The Women’s Assessment Service offers scheduled appointments for a variety of early pregnancy, antenatal and postnatal patients for new and ongoing concerns.

If your GP has faxed through a referral, you will receive a phone call to schedule an appointment within a reasonable time frame.

For women with newly arising concerns, please contact the Birthing and Assessment Service via the hospital switchboard on (08) 8204 5511 to speak to a midwife. They will triage your concern, advise you on the appropriate course of action, and advise you on where to present for management (if needed).

We are open from 7:00 am until 8:00 pm, 7 days per week.

If you need any advice about any problem in your pregnancy or postnatal recovery, phone the hospital switchboard on (08) 8204 5511 and ask for the Birthing and Assessment Suite. They will triage your call and advise you of what to do.

  • If you are more than 20 weeks pregnant and have any arising concerns outside of these hours, please contact the Birthing and Assessment Service via the hospital switchboard on (08) 8204 5511 for assessment.
  • If you are less than 20 weeks pregnant and have any arising concerns requiring immediate medical attention outside of these opening hours, please present to the Emergency Department
