Celebrating 50 Years of Flinders Medical Centre in 2026
For five decades, Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) has stood as a cornerstone of healthcare provision in South Australia. Since opening in 1976, FMC has delivered compassionate and high-quality care, driven medical innovation, and supported generations of patients and families.
In 2026, we celebrate the people, milestones, and stories that have shaped our journey, as we look forward to the future.
Our Journey Through Five Decades
From humble beginnings to becoming a leading tertiary hospital, FMC’s story is one of growth, innovation, and community care.

1976 - FMC opens as South Australia’s first integrated teaching hospital, partnering with Flinders University.

1980s - Introduction of advanced cardiac and neonatal services, setting new standards in patient care.

1990s - Expansion of cancer care and surgical innovations, improving outcomes for thousands of patients.

2000s - Southern Health is established, bringing together FMC, Noarlunga Health Services, and Drug & Alcohol Services SA.

2010s - Major redevelopment projects, including the completion of the redevelopment of the Rehabilitation, Aged Care and Palliative Care Building.

2020s - FMC continues to lead in patient-centred care and innovation, as we work together with community to shape the future of care in the south.
