Ear, Nose and Throat (Otorhinolaryngology) Services at Flinders Medical Centre
The Flinders Medical Centre Otolaryngology Unit provides full general ear, nose and throat (ENT) services including paediatric services.
Head and Neck and Thyroid Cancer Services
The Unit performs regular head and neck oncology surgery (surgery for cancers). Services include urgent head and neck clinic assessments, diagnostic endoscopy and surgical resection of tumours including microvascular reconstructive surgery. Patients are managed in a multi-disciplinary team approach. Common patient presentations are with neck, parotid, tonsil, laryngeal or thyroid masses. We provide many treatment options: surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, interventional radiology, dietetics, speech pathology, and specialised head and neck nursing.
Otology clinics
This unit will see patients with complicated ear infections, cholesteatoma, severe deafness requiring cochlear implantation, and manage acoustic neuromas in conjunction with neurosurgery.
Adult Cochlear Implant Program
Flinders Medical Centre provides the adult cochlear implant service in South Australia. This Unit is able to provide audiological assessments to determine suitability for cochlear implantation and implant surgery as well as ongoing postoperative rehabilitation and maintenance.
Rhinology, pituitary and skull base
FMC provides advanced endoscopic sinus surgery, anterior skull base with neurosurgery and a Rhinology fellowship program. We manage adult and paediatric patients with sinusitis, frontal drillout, CSF leak repairs, pituitary and skull base tumours.
Voice and Laryngology clinic
This unit conducts regular voice clinics in conjunction with the Speech Pathology Department for diagnosis and management of patients with various forms of dysphonia (loss of voice). For further information, please see our Voice Clinic.
The unit also treats adult patients with airway, and swallowing disorders. We provide laryngeal surgery for patients under local anaesthesia in our Ambulatory procedure clinic. This ENT ambulatory clinic received the 2017 Award for Excellence in Innovation at SALHN.
OSA (sleep) clinic
ENT will see semi-urgently patients with moderate to severe OSA for multi-level upper airway surgery. We also see non-urgently mild OSA or primary snoring (with negative OSA). Factors to expedite referrals are sleep study reports and whether the patient has failed or is intolerant of CPAP.
Facial ENT
This is a new service providing a comprehensive nasal and facial functional assessment and treatment options for patients.
Paediatrics
ENT treats children with sleep disordered breathing (OSA > 2 years of age), recurrent tonsillitis, chronic ear infections, demonstrated audiological hearing loss and speech delay. The unit has developed an audiology led grommet follow up pathway which has freed up slots in our clinic to see new patients instead of grommet reviews. Patients are followed up by audiology post-grommet insertion and this pathway allows patients to be booked back to see ENT if there is an audiological concern.
We are no longer accepting referrals to see patients with complex airway and swallowing issues. These are being forwarded to the WCH.
Aboriginal ear health outreach visits
Bi-monthly community-based ENT clinic at the Aboriginal Family Practice at Noarlunga with monthly Audiology clinics also held there.
Tonsil clinic
We have protocol-led clinics for patients referred specifically for children and adults with recurrent tonsillitis and sleep disordered breathing.
General ENT
We also see general ENT conditions such as epistaxis and undifferentiated ENT symptoms. This clinic is generally considered for non-urgent ENT conditions.
Referrals
Referrals from general practitioners or medical specialists are accepted.
