The Donor Conception Register (DCR) is a central and secure online archive of South Australian donor conception treatment information which includes historical information (where available) from the 1970s up to the current day.
- DCR administrators: Authorised staff in SA Health, South Australian ART clinics and the Donor Conception Register Support Service (DCRSS) who maintain the DCR.
- DCR participants: People who can register to be a DCR user, but who have not yet done so.
- DCR users: DCR participants who have registered to access information held in the DCR about other DCR participants and DCR users linked to themselves (i.e. their connections).
- Parent’s donor(s): The donor (or two donors) linked to a parent’s donor conception treatment. This includes egg and sperm (i.e. gametes) donors.
- Retrospective or historical information: Information from donor conception treatments during or before September 2004.
- Your connections: DCR participants and DCR users who are either linked to the same donor (e.g. donor-conceived siblings) or are linked to the same donor conception treatment (e.g. a parent, donor and donor-conceived person).
An Australian first
South Austalia’s DCR is the first of its kind in Australia, providing the state’s donor conception community (DCR participants) with the ability to register to access information within an online archive that is updated in real-time.
The DCR is also one of only a few registers worldwide with retrospective effect. This means the online DCR also provides its registered DCR users with access to historic donor conception treatment information dating back to the 1970s (where available and linked to them) that may not have been previously available.

Information held in the DCR archive
Since November 2021, authorised assisted reproductive treatment (ART) clinic staff have been adding donor conception treatment information into the DCR.
ART clinics in South Australia are required by ART law to include the following information in the DCR about ART (donor conception) treatments:
- the donor’s name, date of birth and contact details including nominated contact address, telephone number and email address
- the donor’s unique identification number or code (if applicable)
- the name, date of birth and contact details including nominated contact address, telephone number and email address of the person undergoing the ART treatment
- the expected delivery date of any child to be born (if known)
- the name and date of birth of any child born as a result of the ART treatment.
The DCR also includes information about private donor conception arrangements from the South Australian Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) registration office where this information is included on the child’s birth registration statement and verified by BDM.
Current and former South Australian ART clinics and other organisations that retain historic donor conception treatment records were requested by SA Health to provide all available information dating back to the 1970s. This may include the information that ART clinics are required to add, as outlined above. Information that could be verified has been added into the DCR.
Gaps do however exist in these historical records, where information has not been found. This means that for some DCR users, the DCR will not contain the information they hoped to find.
As the DCR operates in real-time, DCR administrators may add missing historical information to the DCR if it becomes available and is able to be verified in the future.
