Outpatient services are planned procedures, consultations or tests that are carried out by a specialist but do not require an overnight stay. These generally occur in public hospitals.
Outpatient services may include:
Assessments – for example, scans or lab tests
Treatments – for example, day surgery or chemotherapy
Chronic disease management – for example, diabetes monitoring
Prevention and education services – counselling or lifestyle advisors
SA Health offers a wide variety of outpatient services at major hospitals, GP Plus or community based clinics. To find out where these services are located, see our outpatient clinics lists.
Services in country hospitals may differ from those in metropolitan hospitals. For more information about country outpatient services, country patients should contact their General Practitioner, or local hospital or community health service.
For more information on how to get an appointment, your options and what you will need to take with you, please read the Outpatients appointment page.
For information on how to refer a patient to an outpatient service please see our Referral Process.
