South Australian Medical Education and Training (SA MET)

SA MET Health Advisory Council

The South Australian Medical Education and Training (SA MET) Health Advisory Council is an unincorporated council established by, and reporting to, the Minister for Health and Wellbeing in South Australia.

Its role is to improve the quality of education, training and welfare for junior doctors within South Australia and make recommendations for the accreditation of prevocational training positions in health services.

This Advisory Council is supported by the SA Medical Education and Training Unit which delivers a broad range of functions that include:

  • Providing leadership in postgraduate medical education and training in South Australia.
  • Working with vocational training colleges to achieve high quality vocational training.
  • Promoting and actively encouraging innovation in postgraduate medical training.
  • Developing linkages and agreements with accreditation agencies and education providers.
  • Establishing, maintaining and promoting partnerships with relevant national and jurisdictional organisations.
  • Contributing to a national core competency set for pre-vocational training and undertakes research in relation to education and training pathways, assessment and the needs of international graduates.
  • Receiving feedback from trainee medical officers about relevant safety and quality matters and advocates to health services about postgraduate training, health and welfare issues.

SA MET Unit

The SA MET Advisory Council is supported by the SA MET Unit which provides secretariat support for the Advisory Council and undertakes a range of other medical education, training and medical workforce functions for the South Australian health system.

The SA MET Unit coordinates the allocation and placement services for Medical Intern Positions and Trainee Medical Officer Recruitment.

South Australian Medical Education and Training Strategic Plan 2021 – 2026

The South Australian Medical Education and Training Strategic Plan 2021-2026 (PDF 384KB) identifies a range of strategies to enhance and improve medical education and training for doctors across the medical education continuum.

The Strategic Plan has been endorsed by the Minister for Health and Wellbeing and the Chief Executive of SA Health.

The Strategic Plan is a clear and innovative blueprint to guide the delivery of challenging but realistic goals that will improve the quality and coordination of learning, education and training provisions for medical professionals, and enhance partnerships within SA Health and training providers.

Areas of focus for the strategic plan include:

  • Embracing a culture of learning and wellbeing by optimising learning opportunities, encouraging workforce wellbeing and fostering leadership.
  • Embedding innovation and collaboration into medical education and training by strengthening relationships with stakeholders and optimising the use of technology.
  • Creating workforce agility by improving career planning and pathways, streamlining induction and recognition of prior learning, and identifying educational activities to meet the needs of the evolving medical workforce.

Preventing and responding to workplace bullying, harassment and discrimination

The Preventing and responding to workplace bullying, harassment and discrimination guide (PDF 500KB) intends to support Trainee Medical Officers and Prevocational Trainee Supervisors and Managers to prevent and respond to workplace bullying, harassment and discrimination in the workplace, by providing resources and supports, in particular:

  • Help identify what is, and what is not workplace bullying, harassment and/or discrimination.
  • Provide instructions about how to respond to and report bullying, harassment and/or discrimination.
  • Outline what is respectful behaviour and how to prevent bullying, harassment and/or discrimination.
  • Support managers and supervisors with managing their responses to reports of bullying, harassment and/or discrimination.
