Perinatal Practice Guidelines

The South Australian Perinatal Practice Guidelines (SAPPG), provide guidance for clinicians to deliver routine care and manage a range of maternal and neonatal conditions and/or procedures using a multi-disciplinary approach to achieve consistency of practice. The guidelines are based on a review of current evidence and expert opinion and are to be used by the following clinicians:

  • Registered midwives
  • Neonatal nurses
  • Obstetricians
  • General Practitioners
  • Neonatologists / Paediatricians
  • Trainee medical officers
  • Pharmacists
  • Midwifery and medical students
  • Ambulance officers

The statewide guidelines do not address all the elements of clinical practice and assume that clinicians are responsible for discussing care with consumers in an environment that is culturally appropriate to ensure informed decision-making and individualised care for pregnant women, mothers and their babies.
