RACE Research Governance
Research Governance Officer – Transfer of function to RMCLHN
What is happening?
We are excited to announce a significant change in the management of our research governance role.
Research governance for the Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network (RMCLHN) will transition from the Rural Support Service (RSS) to RMCLHN on Monday 3 March 2025, with Carolyn Martin commencing in the role of Research Governance Officer (RGO).
The RSS will continue to have an RGO role for the other five regional Local Health Networks.
Why is it changing?
Having a dedicated, in-house RGO will help ensure RMCLHN is a partner of choice for researchers through streamlined, efficient approval processes and dedicated, tailored support. It will also increase the efficiency of research approvals, monitoring, local dissemination and translation.
What will happen to my application?
All research applications with existing governance approval will remain valid and unaffected by this transition. Researchers can continue their projects as planned without any interruptions. As of Monday 3 March 2025, the governance of your research project will be managed by the RMCLHN RGO, Carolyn Martin.
The RMCLHN RGO will directly contact Principal Investigators to discuss the impact of the change in governance on research applications currently under review.
What will happen to new applications?
New research applications will be reviewed by the RMCLHN RGO as of Monday 3 March 2025.
Research Governance at RMCLHN
Research Governance focuses on ensuring the quality, safety, privacy, risk management, financial management, and ethical acceptability of research. A Site-Specific Assessment (SSA) is distinct from the ethics submission and review process. Essentially, the SSA is a research governance assessment that evaluates whether the necessary processes, resources, and approvals are in place to conduct the research at a specific site or institution.
The Principal Investigator must complete and submit an SSA form for each public health organisation (the "site") where the research project will take place. For multi-site research projects, this may require a separate SSA form for each Local Health Network.
The SSA evaluates several key areas, including:
- the availability of local resources to support the project
- whether relevant approvals have been obtained to enable the project (e.g., departments and/or facilities where the project will be conducted)
- financial arrangements
- insurance arrangements
- the training and expertise of research staff
