The Mental Health Strategy & Planning Branch has commissioned an all-ages Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Centre (ASEWC) in Adelaide.

The centre is jointly funded by the Commonwealth and South Australian Governments as part of the national bilateral agreement on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.

The National Indigenous Network Initiative Ltd (NINI), along with its consortium partners Sonder Care Limited and OARS Community Transitions were selected as the successful provider.

The Centres key intent is to enable all Aboriginal people in South Australia to have their mental health needs met through seamless service provision that is culturally and clinically capable, safe, appropriate, and effective.

The service’s priority is not to duplicate or replace existing services, but to ‘value-add’ and link with existing services by enhancing the accessibility, cultural security and appropriateness of mental health services provided to Aboriginal Consumers and their families.

The Aboriginal Social Emotional Wellbeing Centre will be become operational in September 2025.

For further information on the ASEWC, see the Sonder website.

To support this new initiative the Mental Health Education Hub SA highly recommends the Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid Course.

Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid Course is an effective and culturally appropriate, empowering Aboriginal people and providing information that is highly relevant in assisting Aboriginal people experiencing mental health problems.

The Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid course will teach you how to assist an Aboriginal adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence based Action Plan.
