Overview of the main points of the Code for the case management of behaviours that present a risk for HIV transmission.
The STI and BBV Case Coordinator is a social worker who supports people affected by HIV and syphilis with complex needs to access treatment and care.
Advances in HIV treatment mean that people living with HIV who take their medications as prescribed can suppress the virus to low levels, and so most people taking HIV treatment enjoy long, healthy lives and are not able to transmit HIV to other people through sex.
Syphilis can be easily cured with a course of penicillin. When syphilis is diagnosed and treated early it can prevent the infection being passed on to other people and development of serious complications, like neurosyphilis and congenital syphilis.
However, some people with HIV and syphilis face barriers to accessing treatment and care and are at higher risk of severe health outcomes and onward transmission.
The STI and BBV Case Coordinator is based in SA Health’s Communicable Disease Control Branch and works closely with specialist clinical, surveillance and policy teams.
They provide a link between primary care, public hospital and sexual health specialist services, and offer practical assistance to people affected by HIV and syphilis to support good health outcomes.
The STI and BBV Case Coordinator also coordinates the SA Syphilis Register.
The STI and BBV Case Coordinator provides outreach support across metropolitan and country SA. They can be contacted directly by patients or other health and community service providers.
