SA Blood Supply Contingency Plan
Contingency planning and emergency preparedness are crucial to minimising the clinical impacts of any blood supply disruptions across the state. Disruptions could be acute (e.g. as a result of a mass casualty incident) or chronic (e.g. ongoing donor shortages).
The National Blood Authority manages the National Blood Supply Contingency Plan, which contains different alert levels for the blood sector (white alert, yellow activate, red activate and green de-activate) and outlines the roles of all parties.
The South Australian Blood Supply Contingency Plan (PDF 707KB) provides a state-wide framework for blood and blood product supply emergencies and shortages in South Australia. The plan is designed to align with the national plan, as well as Emergency Blood Management Plans that are developed by local hospitals, pathology providers and the state-wide pre-hospital retrieval service.
