Code of Practice for the Storage and Transport of Drugs of Dependence 2025

The controlled substances legislation requires storage and transport of drugs of dependence (schedule 8 drugs) to comply with the Code of Practice for the Storage and Transport of Drugs of Dependence 2025 (PDF 126KB) (the 2025 Code).

About the Code

The purpose of the Code is to minimise the risk of theft, loss or diversion of Schedule 8 drugs during storage and transport. The Code sets out the mandatory requirements to comply with the Controlled Substances Act 1984 and the Controlled Substances (Poisons) Regulations 2011.

The Code applies to the storage and transport of all Schedule 8 drugs, except when lawfully prescribed or supplied to a person, or a person acting on their behalf.

Key changes to the 2025 Code

  • The 2025 Code is a checklist that can be used to self-assess storage and transport solutions (see fact sheets for examples).
  • Greater flexibility and opportunity to implement contemporary solutions for storing and transporting drugs of dependence in South Australia.

See the Summary of main changes (2025 Code) (PDF 224KB).

Note

Posting S8 drugs is regulated under national law and must comply with section 85W of the Crimes Act 1914 (Cth).

Approvals under the now repealed Code of Practice for the Storage and Transport of Drugs of Dependence, 2012 (Version 1.0) to store Schedule 8 drugs in a location other than a safe remain valid.
