Outpatient services are planned procedures, consultations or tests that are carried out by a specialist but do not require an overnight stay. These generally occur in public hospitals.

Outpatient services may include:

  • Assessments – for example, scans or lab tests
  • Treatments – for example, day surgery or chemotherapy
  • Chronic disease management – for example, diabetes monitoring
  • Prevention and education services – counselling or lifestyle advisors
