Veterans Health Advisory Council (VHAC)
The Veterans’ Health Advisory Council (VHAC) advises the Minister on health issues of veterans, war widows and their families and advocates on their behalf.
The VHAC was established by the Minister for Health in 2009 as one of a number of Health Advisory Councils (HACs). The Council’s function and operations are defined by a set of rules (similar to a constitution) determined by the Minister.
Council members are appointed by the Minister. All current VHAC members have experienced military service. The VHAC meets at least four times a year. Administrative support is provided by a part-time Executive Officer, who is employed by RSL Care SA and funded by a special grant from SA Health.
The VHAC’s immediate priorities are:
- to undertake a review, in partnership with SA Health, to provide recommendations to the Minister of Health, on an updated Framework for Veterans Health Care that aligns with the directions for veterans’ health care under Transforming Health
- as part of the above review provide recommendations to the Minister of Health as to how the SA Health Veterans’ Service Guarantee, which currently focuses on services provided at the Repat, would best be applied across SA Health’s hospitals.
The VHAC is also identifying its areas of key interest and the actions required to support them. If you would like to refer an issue to VHAC for possible consideration contact us.
