Veterans' Health Advisory Council (VHAC)
The Veterans’ Health Advisory Council (VHAC) advises the Minister on health issues of veterans, war widows and their families and advocates on their behalf.
The VHAC was established by the Minister for Health in 2009 as one of several Health Advisory Councils (HACs). The Council’s function and operations are defined by a set of rules (similar to a constitution) determined by the Minister.
Council members are appointed by the Minister. All current VHAC members include Reservists from Navy, Army and Air Force as well as ex-serving veterans and medical specialists who deal with veterans, and family members and carers of veterans.
The VHAC meets at least four times a year.
Priorities
The VHAC’s priorities are:
- The VHAC has worked with SA Health in the development of the Veteran Wellbeing Action Plan 2023-26, following a review of the Framework for Veterans Health Care 2016-2020 and will monitor the implementation of the Veteran Wellbeing Action Plan.
- To maintain a watching brief on the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide and to recommend appropriate actions.
- Providing strategic advice on the services provided at the Veteran Wellbeing Centre at the Repat Health Precinct.
For information on the operations of the VHAC, see the VHAC Rules (PDF 211KB).
