Surveillance of notifiable conditions

The Communicable Disease Control Branch (CDCB) conducts state-wide surveillance of all notifiable conditions in South Australia.

The collection and analysis of surveillance information is used to initiate immediate public health action designed to minimise the transmission of infectious diseases.

Surveillance information is also used to develop, evaluate and improve public health policy such as the National Immunisation Program.

The South Australian Public Health Act 2011 provides the legislative framework for the collection and reporting of surveillance information.

The Act requires medical practitioners and laboratories to notify each episode of infection to the Communicable Disease Control Branch.
