Early works for the new Acute Services Building at Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) have commenced, with major works expected to start later in 2024.
Once operational, the Acute Services Building will form the new main entrance for FMC.
As part of the $572 million Southern Redevelopment – Stage 1 project, the Acute Services Building will deliver an additional 98 clinical spaces, increasing access to care in the south.

The new Acute Services Building will consist of seven levels, including:

  • Level 1 – Entry, Lobby and Cafe, along with a new Day of Surgery Admissions area
  • Level 2– 18-bay Medical Day Unit and new Podiatry area
  • Level 3 – four new Operating Theatres and recovery areas
  • Level 4 – a dedicated floor for the FMC Eye Surgery Clinic which will enable the integration of SALHN’s ophthalmology services into a single facility
  • Level 5 – a 16 bed Intensive Care Unit and supporting CT scanner
  • Level 6 and 7 – two 32 bed Adult Inpatient Units.

The upgrade and expansion of FMC will also include upgrades to existing back-of-house facilities within the hospital, including an expansion of the main kitchen, sterilisation services and mortuary. Select engineering plant equipment will also be replaced to sustain the existing hospital and support the new services.

The Acute Services Building is expected to be operational in 2028.
