Dr Chen Au Peh

Locations:

  • Royal Adelaide Hospital
  • Hampstead Dialysis Centre

Biography:

Dr Peh is a Consultant Renal Physician at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Adelaide. His main research interests include Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, ANCA-Associated Vasculitis and Membranous Nephropathy. He has been involved in several international clinical trials in ANCA-Associated Vasculitis including RITUXVAS, MYCYC, RITAZAREM and PEXIVAS. Results from these clinical trials have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases. They helped to convince the Australian Department of Health to approve the use of publicly-funded Rituximab for patients with ANCA-Associated Vasculitis.

From 2014-2018, Dr Peh was project leader of an Australian Government-funded foreign aid project in Myanmar (Burma) to improve the health outcomes of snakebite patients. In 5 years, his team helped Myanmar double its production of antivenom from 60,000 to 120,000 vials per year. Furthermore, nearly 100% of all antivenom produced in Myanmar now is lyophilised, which helps overcome the lack of cold chain storage. His team gathered evidence showing that the time interval between bite and the administration of antivenom increased the risk of developing kidney failure. Every hour of delay added to the risk of serious complications.
