Diabetes Education Unit at Flinders Medical Centre

The Flinders Medical Centre Diabetes Education Unit is available to people with diabetes and their families.

Our service may be able to help you if you have:

  • type 1 diabetes (child, adolescent, adult)
  • type 2 diabetes (child, adolescent, adult) requiring insulin
  • gestational diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy)

The aim of our service is to provide information, support and assistance to promote a shared responsibility in health and wellbeing, and prevent complications and illness.

Services are available for inpatients and outpatients. 

An educational program is negotiated according to patient needs and may include information on:

  • healthy eating
  • activity/exercise
  • tablets (oral hypoglycaemic agents)
  • insulin and injecting devices
  • insulin titration
  • blood glucose monitoring
  • blood ketone monitoring
  • handling and disposal of sharps
  • planning a pregnancy
  • travel
  • illness and sick day management
  • early detection prevention of complications
  • rights and responsibilities

Specialised services include diabetes in pregnancy, paediatric diabetes, Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS), Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII or Insulin Pump Therapy).

The diabetes educators work closely with other members of the Acute Diabetes team within Flinders Medical Centre (FMC), and GP Plus Marion as well as Intermediate Care Services (ICS) Marion, Noarlunga and Aldinga. Patients seen at FMC may be referred to other regional sites, if it is more convenient and clinically appropriate.

Referrals to the Diabetes Education Unit can be made by your local doctor.
