Day rehabilitation services are provided at a hospital or health service for people who are living at home. Day rehabilitation may involve a number of different therapists and health professionals working with you to achieve your recovery goals.
You may attend multiple sessions per week, depending on your rehabilitation goals. Some of your therapy program may be provided over telerehabilitation which involves you remaining at home whilst linking up over a video conference with your treating health professional.
There is no cost to access day rehabilitation services.
Often day rehabilitation is organised by your treating hospital so that you can continue your therapy once you return home. Otherwise a referral from a health professional, such as a General Practitioner or medical specialist, is required.
Day Rehabilitation Services offer integrated programs with access to a range of services, including:
- rehabilitation medicine
- occupational therapy
- speech pathology
- exercise physiology
- social work.
Rehabilitation therapies may include:
- gym and circuit training
- individual and group therapy sessions
- use of robotics and other specialised equipment
- spasticity management.
To access day rehabilitation, you must:
- be 18 years or older
- have clear multi-disciplinary goals which can be achieved in a short term program
- be motivated to participate
- have physical and cognitive capacity to participate
- be medically stable and able to tolerate travel to centre based services
- be independent with personal hygiene/continence or have someone available to assist during sessions as required.
