Emergency and Perioperative Medicine Services at Flinders Medical Centre
The Division comprises the Emergency Department, Operating Theatre Service and the Department of Anaesthesia & Pain Management at Flinders Medical Centre (FMC).
The Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) Emergency Department is open 24 hours, 7 days a week.
It is the obstetric trauma centre for South Australia and a designated state trauma centre. FMC Emergency Department (ED) is accredited for training by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine.
The Emergency Department is one of the busiest in South Australia, with approximately 74,000 attendances per year:
- 21% are less than15 years of age
- 43% are admitted to a hospital
- 38% are admitted to FMC
People come to the ED with a variety of illnesses. Our first priority is to treat patients with life or limb threatening illness or injuries, and these patients are attended urgently on arrival.
The department is divided into adult and paediatric areas. The adult area has two streams - one for patients likely to be admitted and the other for patients likely to be discharged. There is a co-located short stay ward for patients requiring up to 24 hours of care.
Eighty per cent of inpatients at FMC are emergency admissions.
