Hand Therapy Service
Hand Therapy is a combined OT and Physiotherapy service based at FMC. The service assesses and treats the loss of upper limb function, following acute or chronic injury.
NOTE: All stroke / neurological patients should be referred to the Day Rehabilitation Service, not the Hand Therapy Service.
OT utilises the following to promote independence:
- Adapted aids/equipment, modification to everyday techniques, splinting, exercises, graded activity programs, swelling and scar management and patient education.
- Assess and treat delays in childhood development or other deficits (congenital or acquired) using standardised assessments and treating using selected individual or group activity.

Information for GPs
From within FMC - Fax the referral slip to (08) 8204 3040.
Document inpatient referrals on the ward journey board and in the patient case file. Include the reason for referral and discuss as part of the team treatment planning.
Contact the relevant Hand OT unit (also available by pager).
From outside FMC - Fax the referral slip to (08) 8204 3040.
Provide a written referral with relevant details, including insurance or compensation cover. Patients with insurance or compensation cover are referred to private Hand Therapy services.
