Mental Health First Aid teaches participants how to provide initial support to individuals who are developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis.

Participants will learn how to use a practical, skills-based action plan, learn the skills to recognise and respond to someone experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves

Workshop aims

Topics covered include developing mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance use disorder.

Mental health crises covered:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
  • Aggressive behaviours

Course length and delivery method

Face-to-face, 2x 6 hours in-person sessions.

Target audience

Suitable for clinical staff working outside of the public mental health sector or anyone with limited mental health knowledge.
