Our brand new 12-bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Flinders Medical Centre will soon be complete and ready to provide person-centred, recovery-focused care to individuals experiencing acute mental health challenges.

Help us create a future where acute mental health care is compassionate and complete.

Our vision and model of care

Our vision is grounded in whole-person care, considering physical, emotional, social, and psychological needs to support patients and their loved ones on their journey to reconnect and rebuild.

As part of our multidisciplinary team, you will:

  • Deliver therapeutic interventions tailored to individual needs.
  • Work collaboratively with clinicians, peer support workers, and an abundance of allied health professionals and many more specialists.
  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for patients and visitors.
  • Be part of a service committed to innovation and continuous improvement in mental health care.

Our model of care, backed by a comprehensive clinical services plan, is designed to deliver compassionate care that recognises each individual’s unique needs and is grounded in SALHN’s quality principles of safe, appropriate, efficient, effective, accessible, and acceptable care.

The current Model of Care for the Margaret Tobin Centre, updated in April 2025, reflects these principles and incorporates the following key elements:

  • Patient-centred care for all individuals aged 18 and over.
  • Alignment with the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist requirements and the Australian Health Facility Guidelines to ensure that the new PICU delivers best-practice design, layout and functionality.
  • Updated operational workflows to ensure seamless delivery of care.

This model ensures that every aspect of treatment and support is tailored to meet the needs of patients and their loved ones, fostering recovery and wellbeing.

Introducing our new modern PICU

The newly completed PICU was created in collaboration with staff and consumers to deliver patient-centred care in a purpose-built space that is tailored to the Model of Care.

The new unit offers multiple therapeutic areas that are spacious, light-filled, comfortable, and domestic in style, ensuring a calming and supportive atmosphere for recovery.

Key features include:

  • Open-plan communal areas and courtyards to encourage physical and social activities
  • A designated family room with private outdoor courtyard, providing a family-friendly space for children and accommodating larger family groups
  • Kitchen and laundry facilities for consumers to reintroduce everyday activities that support their rehabilitation journey.
  • A home-like layout, with bedrooms each having their own private ensuite and are spread across two pods of six rooms, each with its own central courtyard, dining, and lounge space.
  • Consumer safety at the forefront, with all areas having clear line of sight from central staff stations.

This innovative design reflects our commitment to creating an environment that supports recovery, independence, and connection, while ensuring safety and comfort for everyone.
