Wellbeing SA

Wellbeing SA will oversee community-wide health and prevention services for all South Australians. It is envisaged Wellbeing SA will lead innovative system change to embed prevention across the life course and disease continuum, to improve physical, mental and social wellbeing and reduce the preventable burden of disease.

This rebalancing of the health system will mean a significant change from a system that focuses on treating people when they become unwell, to one that is based on promoting physical, mental and social wellbeing, preventing ill health and supporting people to maintain wellbeing and lead healthier lives.

Establishment of Wellbeing SA

Initial establishment of Wellbeing SA has commenced within the Department for Health and Wellbeing, and work will be undertaken to support its establishment as an Attached Office.

Lyn Dean has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer, and initial teams have been assigned to support further planning and progression of Wellbeing SA.

In late 2018 and early 2019 consultation occurred with many stakeholders and partners aboutthe development of Wellbeing SA.  This consultation feedback has informed the development of the model for Wellbeing SA which outlines the rationale, vision and principles as well as priority population groups, providing a solid foundation to guide the agency as the Strategic Plan is developed.

It is anticipated that, Wellbeing SA will progressively become responsible for:

  • system leadership in prevention, the collection and use of data and evidence to inform practice and out of hospital strategies and services funding approaches and services for prevention, health promotion and hospital avoidance
  • working collaboratively with community and stakeholders to impact physical, mental and social wellbeing and coordination of care
  • supporting the implementation of evidence based approaches for health promotion and integrated community based health care
  • focusing on priority settings and priority population groups who experience poorer health outcomes and are at higher risk of preventable hospital admissions.

Wellbeing SA will evolve over time to ensure it can best support the health and wellbeing of South Australians.

Development of the Wellbeing SA Strategic Plan

Recently, a range of stakeholders have contributed to the development of the Wellbeing SA Strategic Plan, through workshops and written submissions.  Consultation has closed and work has commenced on the analysis of feedback which will be used to inform the drafting of the Plan.  It is anticipated that a draft Plan will be available for targeted consultation in November 2019 before the Wellbeing SA Strategic Plan 2020 - 2025 is completed by early 2020.

The purpose of the Plan is to establish the first five year goal for the agency, that strives towards realising an aspirational long term vision.  Using the best available data and evidence and considering current policy contexts, the Wellbeing SA Strategic Plan will also establish the strategic directions and policy actions for the agency, and the intended outcomes and measures of success.
