Admitted sub-acute (Audited)
Sub-acute care is specialised multidisciplinary care in which the primary need for care is optimisation of the patient’s functioning and quality of life. A person’s functioning may relate to their whole body or a body part, the whole person, or the whole person in a social context, and to impairment of a body function or structure, activity limitation and/or participation restriction.
It includes rehabilitation, palliative, geriatric evaluation and management and psychogeriatric care types.
The sub-acute dataset was introduced primarily to support South Australia’s obligations regarding the national reform agenda on Activity Based Funding and contains data elements required (in addition to ISAAC) to understand the patient’s functioning and quality of life.
Sub-acute records need to be linked to an ISAAC record.
NOTE: sub-acute care requires additional information to be collected – refer to the Admitted sub-acute section. Non-acute (maintenance care) data requirements have been incorporated into ISAAC.
Non-admitted emergency activity (EDDC) (Audited)
The Emergency Department Data Collection (EDDC) details presentations for Emergency Departments (ED) in public hospitals across South Australia.
The purpose of the collection is to enable comparisons of performance in respect to access to services, quality clinical outcomes and patient management. The collection aims to show patterns in presentations to assist with the planning of services and improvement of care and outcomes for the SA public.
It also ensures South Australia meets national reporting obligations for collecting and reporting non-admitted patient ED data.
A key aspect of measuring and understanding what is happening within an emergency department is use of triage categories. These categorise the urgency of the patient’s need for medical and nursing care as set by the Australian College of Emergency Medicine:
Triage 1: RESUSCITATION: Patient must be seen within 2 minutes of presentation time
Triage 2: EMERGENCY: Patient must be seen within 10 minutes of presentation time
Triage 3: URGENT: Patient must be seen within 30 minutes of presentation time
Triage 4: SEMI-URGENT: Patient must be seen within 60 minutes of presentation time
Triage 5: NON-URGENT: Patient must be seen within 120 minutes of presentation time

Non-admitted outpatient activity (MMSS) (Audited)
The Monthly Management Summary System (MMSS) was once the main data collection and reporting tool for SA Health providing information about public hospital profiles. MMSS contains monthly aggregate data dating back to the mid ‘80s.
It is in the process of being phased out in favour of transactional collections such as the Outpatient patient level dataset. However currently MMSS holds the official statistics for non-admitted outpatient service counts.

Mental Health data is collected from all hospitals and agencies that provide Mental Health services to the community.
Mental health services are provided in specialised mental health hospitals and facilities, within designated wards in general hospitals, and also in the community through visits and outpatient services.
Mental health information is broken down by age group and is specifically identified as services provided to children and adolescents, older people, and the rest of the adult population.
South Australia also provides annual information to the Commonwealth where the nation’s information is collated and compared to ensure the best mental health care possible for all people needing mental health care.
The Community Mental Health Care NMDS includes data on client contacts with government-operated specialised community mental health care services and hospital-based ambulatory care services, such as outpatient and day clinics.
The Residential Mental Health Care NMDS includes data on client episodes in government-operated residential mental health care services
Definitions that are used in the data presented are from the National Health Data Dictionary.
Information on mental health acute care is collected as a subset of Admitted Activity (ISAAC).
