Sustainable Medical Models Project

A Sustainable Medical Models Project Team in Country Health SA is exploring options for addressing critical medical workforce challenges at some of the larger country hospitals where the traditional GP on-call model is under significant strain, with local GPs having increasing difficulty supporting both busy private practices and the demands of a 24/7 emergency service and hospital.

New models, which will involve local GPs wherever they have capacity, are likely to include an increase in the number of employed medical staff and an increasing contribution from ‘rural generalists’ and/or procedural GPs. These new models will be locally specific, recognising that one size doesn’t fit all.
