50 Year anniversary of existing Bordertown Hospital
Friday 10 November 2017
Members of the local community, staff and former employees are invited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bordertown Hospital’s current building.
Executive Officer Director of Nursing, Bordertown Memorial Hospital, Jennie Jacobs, said she was looking forward to marking the occasion with her colleagues, friends and people from the town and district.
“It’s an opportunity for the community to come together and not only reflect on the past but also focus on the great things the hospital is doing at present,” Ms Jacobs said.
“This afternoon tea is a teaser for the big party we will have in 2023, when Bordertown celebrates the 100th year of its hospital.”
Building began on the Tatiara Soldiers Memorial Hospital in June 1923 and a year later, the hospital opened in the presence of more than 1000 people.
Throughout the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, the hospital had its own cow to provide fresh milk for patients and staff and locals volunteered their labour by cutting up firewood that the hospital used for heating and cooking.
By the 1960s, the hospital required significant upgrades and modernisation, but the cost of renovating and extending the old building was almost as much as an entirely new building.
In February 1967, the foundation stone for the current Bordertown Memorial Hospital was laid, and in November of that year patients were moved from the old hospital to the new building. The old building was then demolished.
Ms Jacobs recently attained 30 years working at Bordertown Hospital and with more than 50 years in the nursing profession, has observed numerous changes in health.
“I’m looking forward to catching up with past and present colleagues and spending the afternoon reflecting on our journey,” Ms Jacobs said.
“In an effort to capture a moment in time, we will seal a time capsule and mount it on the wall at the hospital entrance. We will open it in November, 2067.
“Hospital staff, former employees and members of the public are invited to attend the afternoon tea, view the memorabilia displays and commemorative photo book, take a hospital tour and witness the sealing of the time capsule.”
Bordertown Memorial Hospital will celebrate its golden jubilee on Sunday, 19 November, from 2-4pm. For more information, contact either Jennie Jacobs or Heidi Pfeiffer on 8752 9000.
