Through the lens competition now open

28 May 2021

Seniors Card members are being encouraged to get creative and submit their entries to the 2021 Through the Lens photographic competition, which opens today.

Office for Ageing Well’s Manager of the South Australian Seniors Card Program, Evlynn Hayes, said the annual competition forms part of this year’s International Day of Older Persons celebrations.

“Through the Lens is a wonderful opportunity for Seniors Card members to share photos they have taken, which reflect their diverse lives and interests,” Ms Hayes said.

“The popular competition proves that older South Australians can harness the experience that comes with age to creatively express themselves, while also encouraging them to learn new skills, develop new interests and discover new ways to demonstrate their individuality.

“This year, the judges are looking for good photographic technique, creativity and clear photographs. You don’t need to have expensive equipment or years of photography experience; anyone can capture a moment in time and tell a story through a photo.”

Finalists will receive prizes, including a large framed copy of their successful photo thanks to major sponsor, Atkins Photo Lab.

Through the Lens 2020 competition winner, Kay Jamieson, said the contest proves age does not limit creativity.

“I was thrilled to be a finalist and beyond delighted the judges then chose my photo as the winner,” Ms Jamieson said.

“A good photo is a result of bringing together some, or all, of the complex rules of photography: the rule of thirds, light, shape, lines, texture, patterns and colour. Sometimes, it’s just being in the right place at the right time.”

The Through the Lens photographic competition closes on Friday 30 July 2021, with finalists chosen across five categories, including landscape and nature, active ageing, artistic photography, meaningful connections and portrait.

Winners in all categories will be announced on Friday 1 October 2021.
