The $58 million major redevelopment of the Lyell McEwin Hospital is one step closer with the official appointment of building contractor, Hansen Yuncken, signing on to complete the project.

Northern Adelaide Local Health Network Chief Executive Officer, Maree Geraghty, said Hansen Yuncken will commence preparatory works by the end of next month for the upgrade and expansion of the existing Emergency Department (ED) and new Short Stay Mental Health Unit (SSMHU).

“We are committed to investing in hospital infrastructure to better support the health and wellbeing of residents in Adelaide’s north,” Ms Geraghty said.

“The redevelopment, set to almost double the current capacity of the Lyell McEwin Hospital ED, is critical in meeting the increased demand generated by local population growth.

“The purpose-built eight-bed SSMHU will provide a more suitable care environment for mental health patients requiring a short stay, and improve patient flow through the ED.

“Highlights of the upgrade and new three-storey ED will include 72 treatment spaces, dedicated paediatric assessment and additional room for education and administrative activities.

“Concurrently, tenders are closing in coming days for the proposed installation of Photovoltaic Solar Array located at the Lyell McEwin Hospital multi-deck existing and new roof, which will contribute to building sustainable hospitals for the future.

“In addition to this, the extension of the multi deck car park is progressing well and expected to open by July 2020.”

The Lyell McEwin Hospital redevelopment will be completed in a staged approach to allow the hospital to continue to safety deliver clinical functions and operate the ED throughout the construction period.

While some existing car parking spaces will be lost when temporary works start for the ED expansion, an extra 205 car parking spaces will be available once works are complete.
