The Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Commitment 2016 - 2018

Nurses and midwives make a unique commitment to the health and care of our community and are proud of the differences we make to people’s lives. Delivering the Best Care, First Time, Every Time is immensely rewarding and satisfying for nurses and midwives, understanding and acknowledging that ill-health and sickness often leaves people at their most vulnerable. Our commitment to excellence and our compassion for the person at the centre of our care is a given.

Today in an era of unprecedented change and transformation, we understand that modern health care is challenging, is resource intensive, highly complex and costly. However, now more than ever, nurses and midwives are ideally placed to provide our unique perspective and strong leadership in designing new and different solutions, generating great ideas and continuing to improve the lives of others, in partnership with others.

The Nursing & Midwifery Strategic Commitment 2016 - 2018 (PDF 77KB) has been developed to lead and support the nursing and midwifery workforce in the transformation of our health system.

The Commitment acknowledges and builds on the work that has already been undertaken through the Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Framework 2013-2015, with a focus on the clinical care standards and priorities identified in Transforming Health.

Our strategic commitment for the next three years identifies four strategic priorities – these are:

Caring with Kindness

'Best care. First Time. Every Time.'

Enabling person centred care through collaborative partnerships between the consumer, the inter-professional team and the broader community to ensure the delivery of equitable, safe quality care.

People and Culture

Embedding a culture of caring through the application of the values and behaviours that underpin the delivery of person-centred nursing and midwifery care.

Workforce Innovation

Extending the capacity and capabilities of nurses and midwives to build a resilient, sustainable and collaborative workforce.

Education and Research Innovation

Supporting evidence based innovation that adds to consumer safety, the nursing and midwifery professions and system effectiveness.

The Nursing & Midwifery Strategic Commitment 2016 - 2018 (PDF 77KB) belongs to and is owned by all SA Health nurses and midwives and can only be achieved through the active participation and buy in of nurses and midwives at all levels and across all service areas.

To facilitate this participation and to support the nursing and midwifery professions, the Nursing and Midwifery Professional Leadership Network has been established.
