DonateLife SA

DonateLife SA was formed in 1996 to coordinate all organ and tissue donor activities across the state. It was previously known as the South Australian Organ Donation Agency (SAODA).

It is also part of the national DonateLife network linked in to the Australian Organ and Tissue Authority (OTA).

DonateLife SA’s clinical staff include Donation Specialist Nursing Coordinators (DSNCs). They work with Donation Medical Specialists, nurses and transplant unit staff at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre, the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Lyell McEwin Hospital and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

DonateLife SA encourages all South Australian families to make an informed decision about becoming an organ and tissue donor, to register their decision on the Australian Organ Donor Register and to discuss and know each other’s wishes. DonateLife SA staff can offer advice and answer questions you may have about organ and tissue donation.

Our commitment

DonateLife SA is committed to improving organ and tissue donation rates and outcomes, encouraging best practice in organ and tissue donation for transplantation, providing specialised family support services and raising awareness across the community.

Our services

Support for organ and tissue donor families

DonateLife SA Donation Specialist Nursing Coordinators are on hand in hospital intensive care units and emergency departments to provide professional advice to families at the time of donation. Follow up counselling and ongoing support is also offered.

Community education

DonateLife SA provides information sessions and a range of educational materials for community groups, workplaces, schools and universities. Each year DonateLife Week serves as a nationwide occasion to redouble awareness-raising activities. DonateLife SA also organises public events such as the annual Rose Planting Ceremony and Service of Remembrance to allow donor families, transplant recipients and their friends to honour the memory of the state’s organ donors.

Best practice organ and tissue donation for transplantation

DonateLife SA staff participate in state, national and international learning forums and training as part of their ongoing commitment to world’s best practice organ and tissue donation and transplantation. Regular Professional Education is offered to further engage medical staff in the national reform agenda.
