TQEH Redevelopment

The centrepiece of the $314 million redevelopment project, a purpose-built clinical services building, is under construction at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) and is expected to be complete by mid-2024.

The 5-level contemporary building spanning 27,000 square metres will allow for the relocation of services from the existing tower building at the hospital, which was built in the 1950s.

It also enables the relocation of rehabilitation services from Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre. The new general rehabilitation wards will pave the way for TQEH to be a key provider of inpatient general rehabilitation services, including stroke, amputation and burns.

The new clinical services building will have:

  • larger emergency department
  • expanded operating theatres, pre-operative and recovery bays
  • state-of-the-art intensive care unit
  • larger medical imaging department
  • centralised pathology laboratory
  • modern procedure suite including cardiac catheterisation laboratory
  • upgraded central sterile supply department
  • purpose-built general rehabilitation wards
  • multiple staff support areas.

Building design

Over the past two decades the population in the western suburbs has grown substantially and the new building has been designed to support this growing population now and into the future.

Every element from admission through to discharge has been considered in the design of the new building to improve consumer experience and support patient wellbeing.

This brand-new building will support the delivery of world-class health care with a functional layout, modern technology and equipment, and all of the accompanying amenities. The design integrates environmentally sustainable features, maximises access to natural light and has multiple outdoor spaces for patients, staff and visitors.

The building will also incorporate design aspects that provide a welcoming environment for our culturally diverse population and artworks will be chosen that acknowledge the traditional owners of the land, exhibiting the stories, traditions and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Working together

To ensure the new clinical services building meets the needs of our community and staff, our engagement strategy is founded in engaging with the people who work in and use the hospital. Clinicians, support staff, patients, carers and the broader community are all part of our engagement and are contributing to the redevelopment of TQEH.

Since 2018, more than 250 participants have been involved in planning and design workshops for the new building. These workshops have informed where services will be located, the layout of rooms, facilities within each area and the interior design to optimise patient and staff flow and experience within and across departments.

Input from staff, patients and carers has been essential throughout the design phase to create a welcoming environment for all and establish design elements that cater to everyone’s needs.

The redevelopment team has also partnered with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups to ensure the facilities can enable positive health outcomes for their people.

The project continues to seek feedback from the community and are looking for new consumers to be part of the next stage of consultation on public furniture, artworks, signage and wayfinding.
