Thoracic Surgery Services at Flinders Medical Centre

Thoracic surgery is provided at Flinders Medical Centre for the treatment of many lung diseases, including lung cancer and benign conditions.

Elective surgery is usually arranged by means of referral from Respiratory Medicine. The thoracic surgeons at FMC participate in the Lung Cancer Multidisciplinary Service in concert with Respiratory Medicine, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care, and Radiology.

An urgent on-call service is available 24/7 including for the management of chest trauma and other emergency conditions. Please note that oesophageal diseases are treated by the Oesophagogastric Unit rather than by the Cardiac and Thoracic Surgical Unit.

Thoracic procedures may be performed by open or video-assisted thoracoscopic techniques depending on the condition.

Clinics

Referrals to the Cardiac and Thoracic Surgical Unit can be made via phone or fax. Please note that referrals for newly diagnosed or suspected lung cancer should be made directly to the Rapid Access Lung Cancer Clinic, part of Respiratory Medicine, rather than directly to the Cardiac and Thoracic Surgical Unit.
