Ophthalmology/eye services at Flinders Medical Centre
The Department of Ophthalmology at Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) is the centre of excellence for academic ophthalmology in South Australia.
With joint support from Flinders University, activities include:
- research and teaching programs
- clinical services at the Flinders Eye Centre including day surgery
- an eye clinic at Morphett Vale servicing the southern suburbs
The Department also hosts the:
- Eye Bank of South Australia (donor tissue for corneal transplantation)
- Australian Corneal Graft Registry
- Australia and New Zealand Registry of Advanced Glaucoma (ANZRAG)
The Flinders Eye Centre offers care for complex eye diseases and our consultant ophthalmologists have a range of subspecialties.

Flinders Eye Centre Clinic offers public and private (Medicare bulk billed) services for people with medical conditions of the eye. The clinic manages all types of ophthalmological problems.

In some fantastic news for the south, an innovative new approach to eye care – the Collaborative Eyecare Project for Ophthalmology at SALHN (CEPOS) – is being rolled out in May 2023 to help reduce waiting times for SALHN ophthalmology services and deliver appropriate and timely care for people with a range of eye conditions.
Developed in partnership with Flinders University, this new service means that people with eye health conditions that do not require specialist, hospital-based treatment will be monitored and managed by fully qualified Optometrists at the Flinders Health2Go clinic. The clinic will also incorporate supervised student education into patient management.
Currently, the CEPOS service is only available for existing SALHN Ophthalmology (Flinders Eye Clinic) patients that meet the clinical selection criteria.
SALHN Ophthalmologists will ensure a consistent approach is used for referring patients to the new service, with a direct pathway in place to refer patients back to SALHN Ophthalmology services if their condition later progresses and needs specialist hospital-based care.
