Intensive and Critical Care Unit (ICCU) Services at Flinders Medical Centre
Flinders Medical Centre Intensive and Critical Care Unit (ICCU) is a 32-bed tertiary intensive care unit (ICU) located in the inner southern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. The unit provides a concentration of highly skilled staff and equipment and facilities required for optimum care of the critically ill patient.
In addition to operating as a general medical and surgical ICU, the unit functions as the state referral centre for critically ill pregnant women, the liver and post-liver transplant intensive care for South Australia and the Northern Territory, the trauma centre for southern and eastern South Australia and also provides support to complex cardiac surgical patients. Flinders Medical Centre ICCU manages in excess of 2000 patient admissions per year.
Further to the consistent delivery of high quality patient care, the ICCU at Flinders Medical Centre has a proud tradition of excellence in teaching, training and research.
Unit philosophy
'Each patient, along with their family and friends is a unique individual with physical, psychological, spiritual and social needs. These needs are met by using a high level of specialist knowledge and clinical skills, within a framework of good communication and teamwork.
Our overall aim is to always care for our patients, families and friends in a manner in which we would like to be cared for ourselves - with dignity and respect.
We believe that relatives should be well informed and encouraged to participate in the care of their loved ones.
We also recognise that some of our patients, despite skilled treatment and care, may not recover. In these circumstances we will endeavour to ensure that comfort and dignity is maintained and that wishes of family and friends are respected.
As a part of a teaching hospital, we are committed to continuing our own education. We recognise the importance of updating our clinical knowledge as a means of ensuring and improving quality care.'
Information for families and carers
Admission to ICCU
We understand that this can be a stressful time and appreciate that you may be very worried about your relative. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them initially to the nurse at the bedside. Equally, please inform us of any information that you feel may be relevant to your relative’s care
Visiting hours
You can visit at any time. After 1100 would be preferred, but we recognise this may not be possible. Please ring the bell upon arrival. If staff are busy, it may take a time for them to answer; please be patient. We ask that you limit the number of visitors at any time to no more than 3 people.
ICCU Volunteers
The ICCU volunteers are the 'front line' of support when visitors arrive at the ICCU. They are trained to liaise with staff regarding access to patients, arrange for family interviews by doctors, social workers and chaplains and support families and friends through times of great trauma. Other areas which volunteers assist in are; arranging accommodation for interstate or country visitors, assisting with making telephone calls, organising parking concession forms and many other tasks as required.

This person can then pass on relevant information. We appreciate however that it may be easier for interstate and overseas relatives to call the unit directly. Please note that in order to maintain patient confidentiality it may be necessary to restrict the information that we give over the phone.
