Endoscopy Unit at Flinders Medical Centre

The Endoscopy Unit at Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) performs approximately 6,000 procedures per year.

Endoscopy enables doctors to examine areas inside the body such as the bowel, stomach and lungs without the need to perform surgery. This includes patients with inflammatory bowel disease, cancer and irritable bowel syndrome.

Aims

The aims of the unit are to:

  • provide a prompt and efficient endoscopic service to FMC and the southern region
  • continuously evaluate and improve patient services through Clinical Practice Improvement and Redesigning Care initiatives
  • promote gastrointestinal endoscopic research
  • provide endoscopic training through a formalised training program for registrars in gastroenterology and surgery
  • provide other diagnostic and day procedures such as liver biopsy

Upgrades underway

Works are currently underway to upgrade the Endoscopy Unit.

The upgrades will include renovated procedure rooms and improved service facilities, including a new reprocessing facility, new sterile store area and upgraded ventilation.

Works are expected to be completed by early 2023.

Referrals

  • internal FMC referrals can be initiated by medical staff and accompanied by a written request form and procedure consent
  • outside referrals can be made by FMC accredited specialists
  • general practitioners requesting endoscopic investigations must first refer their patients to the Gastroenterology Clinic for a consult prior to a procedure booking
