Colorectal services at Flinders Medical Centre

The Colorectal Unit is involved in the treatment of cancer and benign disease of the colon and rectum, surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, and management of anorectal conditions including fistulas, fissures and haemorrhoids. In addition, a pelvic floor clinic manages patients with pelvic floor dysfunction or faecal incontinence.

There are seven consultant surgeons on the unit who provide services comprising of consultation and outpatient procedures (such as treatment of haemorrhoids), colonoscopy and surgery.

The SCOOP program provides a prevention and early detection service for patients at moderate to high risk of colorectal cancer.

Stomal Therapy Nursing Service

Specialist nurses from the Flinders Medical Centre Colorectal Unit/Ward 5E offer care and support for people who have urinary or bowel stomas.

A stoma is a surgically created opening onto the surface of the abdomen that allows faeces or urine to drain into a bag or other ostomy appliance.

Stomas may be required in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, bowel cancer, bowel obstruction, or perforation. They are sometimes used in the management of incontinence.

Stomal therapy services include:

  • education and counselling for patients and family members that have had, or are about to have surgery that may require a stoma
  • support and education for people during their hospital stay
  • discharge planning to ensure patients can contact appropriate community supports
  • education for hospital staff in stoma care
  • outpatient clinics Tuesday and Thursday, 9.00am to 11.30am
