These services aim to improve the health, wellbeing and function of gender-diverse people across South Australia.

Adult Gender Diversity Health Service

The Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) has introduced the Adult Gender Diversity Health Service, which provides comprehensive Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy (GAHT).

The service is designed to support transgender and gender diverse people through every step of their hormone therapy journey, from initial assessment and education to ongoing monitoring and management of hormone treatments. The goal is to promote physical changes that align with the individual’s gender identity, while prioritising their overall health and wellbeing.

All appointments are held at Modbury Hospital.

Child and Adolescent Gender Diversity Health Service

The Women’s and Children’s Hospital Gender Diversity Service aims to improve the health and wellbeing of gender diverse children and young people (up to 17 years of age).  

Services include:

  • mental health support
  • medical support from a Fertility Counselling Specialist or Gender Diversity Paediatrician
  • medical nursing to support with puberty suppression and gender affirming hormone administration.

A written referral from a GP, paediatrician, psychiatrist, psychologist or mental health professional is required.

All appointments are held at Women’s and Children’s Hospital, North Adelaide.

Gender Affirming Surgery Service

The Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) is in the process of designing the statewide gender diversity surgical services, aligned with the SA Health Statewide Gender Diversity Model of Care (PDF 1001KB).

More information about the service will be made available closer to commencement.

Gender Connect Country SA (SHINE SA) 

Gender Connect Country SA is a free service providing confidential support for people identifying as transgender, gender diverse or gender questioning. Advice is provided by peer workers with lived experience of gender diversity by phone or webchat.

Statewide Gender Diversity Model of Care

The Statewide Gender Diversity Model of Care (PDF 1001KB) outlines SA Health’s plan for the delivery of health services for people who are transgender, gender-diverse, gender non-binary or gender questioning. This includes:

  • mainstream health and gender support
  • specialised gender diversity services
  • specialised gender diversity surgical services.
