Referring patients to BreastScreen SA

Breast screening is open to all women from age 40. Two yearly screening is primarily recommended for all asymptomatic women aged 50 to 74, and women with a strong family history of breast cancer will be invited for screening from age 40.

While patients are not required to obtain a doctor’s referral to attend BreastScreen SA for free breast cancer screening, a recommendation from a GP or health professional is highly regarded by a woman when she is deciding to make an appointment.

We’ve put together a sample letter that practices can use to encourage women within the target age group of 50 to 74 to make their appointment for a breast screen. Some practices also follow up with patients who may be overdue for their regular breast screen by sending them a reminder letter.
